The Greenhouse Growing Session lasts for 3 months and is the first component of our City Farm School Internship Program. From March 11 until May 26th, this session focuses on the skills and sciences behind greenhouse growing, soil, and seeds. It takes place in the downtown Concordia Greenhouse located at the top of the Hall Building.

This stream requires 60 hours over the course of three months. If you are interested in applying for the full internship program, please go here. You do not have to be a Concordia Student to apply.  This internship is open to everyone!

What you can expect to learn from this programme:

  • fundamental practices of organic vegetable gardening
  • technical training in greenhouse growing and seedling production
  • an understanding of local food systems, opportunities and challenges
  • how to work with soil and what makes for healthy growing conditions


The programme is divided into two main components – Education and Internship.



This series of workshops is designed to familiarize student with the main theories, concepts and practices of organic agriculture.  The workshops will be presented by a number of experienced organic farmers, permaculturalists, and horticulturalists.  The goals of these workshops are to help add depth to the practical training provided in the internship.

Reading Group:

During the course of the year students will be given a series of readings pertaining to political issues of food and farming. Students will be able to discuss the readings during the lunch breaks of our Saturday workshops.



All students complete 60 internship hours between March 11 and May 26 to complete the Greenhouse Growing Session.  The schedule will be made with you, and will not fluctuate. The greenhouse shifts will be selected by you before the program begins – they will comprise 48 of your 60 hours.  For the remaining 12 hours, you will be presented with a list of dates and activities which you can sign up for in the first two weeks of the session.  These activities will vary from helping coordinators with public volunteer sessions, to promotions for our seedling sale, to assistance at the seedling sale.  During your internship, you will work with other members of the school to manage seedling growth and to think on crop plans and how these seedling could be put to use.

Greenhouse Shifts

From March 11 to May 26 students will work in the Concordia Greenhouse to produce thousands of seedlings for the public and to community gardens around Montreal.  During these work sessions, students will work directly with the Greenhouse Staff to learn the skill of seedling production and greenhouse growing.

Greenhouse Shift – One 4 hour shift per week

Mondays shift a 9am – 1pm

Wednesdays shift c 9am – 1pm
shift d 1:30pm – 5:30pm
Fridays shift e 9am – 1pm
shift f 1:30pm – 5:30pm
During registration you will select your shift.  Shifts cannot be changed once assigned.

COST: $275 What does the cost cover? The tuition covers the cost of the 5 workshops, materials such as readings and supplies students take home, as well as the training you will receive from the CFS coordinators.

BURSARIES: We are offering a bursary program for those who need financial assistance. We don’t want cost to be a limiting issue for interns, so we have a supplemental program to raise money through product sales. For more information, please email

To register, all students must fill out the application form. We will host interviews at the beginning of February after all application have been received. All students will be notified within a week of their interview if they have been selected for the school.

Notes: Holidays – each student will be allowed to schedule 1 week of holiday time where they are not expected to attend any greenhouse shifts.
